Maulana Muhammad Junagarhi

Maulana Muhammad Junagarhi مولانا محمد جوناگڑھی (1890–1941) was a highly influential Indian Islamic scholar and orator, famously known as Khatib-e-Hind (Orator of India). He was a prominent figure in the Ahl-i Hadith movement, advocating a return to the direct sources of the Qur’an and Sunnah. His most significant and enduring contribution is his popular Urdu translation of the Holy Qur’an, known for its clarity and accessibility. He also undertook the monumental task of translating Imam Ibn Kathir’s famous Tafsir (exegesis) into Urdu, making a vast body of scholarly work available to the subcontinent. Junagarhi’s works, such as Sayf-i Muḥammadī, emphasized adherence to the Prophet Muhammad’s traditions and a strong stance against innovation (Bid’ah). He co-founded the All-India Ahl-i Hadith Conference and used his powerful speaking skills to propagate monotheism and authentic Islamic teachings. His scholarly legacy continues to shape religious discourse across South Asia through his translated and original works.
