Abu al-Faraj Abd al-Rahman ibn Ali ibn Muhammad ibn al-Jawzi
Abū al-Faraj ‘Abd al-Raḥmān ibn ‘Alī ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Jawzī أبو الفرج بن الجوزي (c. 1116–1201 CE / 510–597 AH), commonly known as Ibn al-Jawzī, was one of the most prolific, versatile, and influential Hanbalī scholars of the Abbasid era, hailing from Baghdad.
Scholarly Profile and Influence
Jurisprudence (Fiqh): He was a leading figure in the Hanbalī school of Islamic law and an authority in legal rulings.
Hadith and History: Ibn al-Jawzī was a master of Ḥadīth and a renowned historian, writing comprehensive works on both subjects.
Preaching and Ethics: He was arguably most famous as a Wā’iz (preacher/exhorter), known for his powerful sermons and writings on ethics (Akhlāq) and spiritual admonition (Wa’z). His ability to move and reform the public through his oratory was legendary.
Theology (‘Aqīdah): While a Hanbalī, he often synthesized views from different theological schools and was known for his opposition to certain extreme views held by some within his own school and by other sects.

Sayd al-Khāṭir (The Hunter of Thoughts): A collection of his personal reflections, insights, and ethical observations.
Talbīs Iblīs (The Deception of Iblīs): A critical work exposing the tricks and errors of Satan, often directed against what he viewed as deviations in various intellectual and spiritual groups, including excessive practices within Sufism.
Al-Muntaẓam fī Tārīkh al-Umam wa al-Mulūk: A detailed general history, covering events from the creation to his own time.
Ibn al-Jawzī remains a towering figure whose works are still widely studied for their depth, moral instruction, and historical value.
