Imam Yusuf ibn Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Barr يُوسُف بن عبد الله بن مُحمَّد بن عبد البر النمري (d. 1071 CE / 463 AH) was one of the most distinguished Maliki scholars and Hadith masters of Al-Andalus (Islamic Spain). Revered as the “Muhaddith of the West,” his scholarly focus was unifying Hadith science with Maliki jurisprudence (Fiqh). His monumental works, such as Al-Tamhīd and Al-Istidhkār (both exhaustive commentaries on Al-Muwatta’ of Imam Malik), are foundational texts in Islamic legal history and Hadith literature. Ibn Abd al-Barr’s contributions are critical for understanding the development of Sunni scholarship in the Western Islamic world, making him an essential figure for researchers in Andalusi history and Maliki Fiqh.
